Learning involves acquiring new information or skills\, while unlearning refers to the process of discarding outdated or erroneous knowledge\, and relearning entails reacquiring knowledge in a new or updated form. This process is not merely about forgetting but about restructuring understanding to accommodate new insights and perspectives. In machine learning and computer vision\, unlearning presents unique challenges and opportunities. Machine unlearning refers to the ability to remove specific data from a model without degrading its overall performance. This capability is essential for addressing legal\, ethical\, and personalization issues. Techniques for unlearning in AI include the removal of data points\, features\, classes\, or entire concepts from datasets. These methods aim to maintain model utility while ensuring the elimination of unwanted or harmful knowledge. Emerging methods in machine unlearning\, such as weight filtering and low-rank class-wise unlearning\, demonstrate promising results in maintaining model integrity while achieving desired unlearning outcomes. These techniques are evaluated through various metrics\, including accuracy retention\, activation distance\, and Zero Retain Forgetting (ZRF) scores. Additionally\, unlearning in multimodal spaces addresses the removal of sensitive or inappropriate content\, enhancing the safety and ethical alignment of AI systems. The exploration of unlearning\, especially in AI\, paves the way for more robust\, adaptable\, and ethically sound models\, capable of evolving in response to new data and societal norms. This ongoing research underscores the importance of unlearning and relearning as foundational components of both human and artificial intelligence development. During the seminar\, some results carried out at UNIMORE within the EU project ELIAS will be presented and discussed. \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n Devis Tuia\n Machine learning for Earth: monitoring the pulse of our Planet with sensor data\, from your phone all the way to space \n \n Abstract: We live an age full of data. In all areas of society\, digital data is now abundant\, but also unstructured and pretty much unexploited. Environmental science is no exception and the last years have seen an increase of use of digital sensing to observe an understand processes at work and their impacts of human activities. In this talk\, I will present some recent research at the interface of machine learning and the geosciences\, where satellite\, drone and close sensing data were used to support mapping over land and sea\, and even below the surface. I will then sketch a number of points of synergetic action necessary to strengthen such interface\, a necessary step to jointly tackling the climate and biodiversity crisis. \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n Gaël Varoquaux\n AI from tabular data to healthcare and society \n \n Abstract: The talk will be on some lessons learned trying to develop AI for tabular data\, central to all organizations\, with the goal of being useful for healthcare and society. While much of the excitement is on machine learning\, much of the work happens before and after. For tabular data\, the bread and butter of every organization\, extensive manual transformation or “data wrangling” is required before machine learning. I will discuss how we progressively rethought this process\, eventually laying the ground of foundation models for tabular data. I will then discuss some considerations about machine learning in healthcare\, and a broader picture on AI developments in society. \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n Caroline Therwath-Chavier\n AI²: why Artificial Intelligence should be All Inclusive \n \n Abstract: In today’s rapidly evolving technological landscape\, the transformative potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is undeniable. However\, as AI continues to revolutionize various industries and aspects of our lives\, questions of inclusivity and equity have come to the forefront for practitioners. This presentation delves into the imperative of making AI all-inclusive\, ensuring that its benefits are accessible to all segments of society. We will explore the ethical\, social\, and economic implications of AI exclusivity\, emphasizing the need for diverse representation in AI development and deployment. Through case studies and real-world examples\, we will highlight the tangible benefits of inclusive AI\, from enhancing decision-making processes to fostering innovation and creativity. Moreover\, the presentation will address the challenges and barriers to achieving inclusivity in AI\, including biases in algorithms\, lack of diversity in AI teams\, and digital divides. By identifying these obstacles\, we can formulate strategies to overcome them and create a more equitable AI ecosystem. Ultimately\, AI² advocates for a future where Artificial Intelligence is not only powerful and innovative but also inclusive and accessible to everyone. By embracing diversity and promoting inclusion\, we can harness the full potential of AI to address pressing societal challenges and build a better world for all.\n\nCaroline is also the co-founder of the Paris meetup chapter of Women in Machine Learning and Data Science (WiMLDS). \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n David Rolnick\n Tackling climate change with machine learning: An opportunity for application-driven innovation \n \n Abstract: Machine learning is increasingly being called upon to help address climate change\, from processing satellite imagery to modeling Earth systems. Such settings represent an important frontier for machine learning innovation\, where traditional paradigms of large\, general-purpose datasets and models often fall short. In this talk\, we show how an application-driven paradigm for algorithm design can respond to problem-specific goals and incorporate relevant domain knowledge. We introduce novel techniques that leverage the structure of the problem (such as physical constraints and multi-modal self-supervision) to improve accuracy and usability across applications\, including monitoring land use with remote sensing\, designing chemical catalysts for the energy transition\, and downscaling climate data. \n \n \n \n \n\n\n \n Register here\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n \n \n EDS 2024: AI & Sustainability\n \n \n\n\n \n Downloadable Resources\n EDS Mobility Grant (ELIAS) – Application Form\n EDS Mobility Grant (ELIAS) – Guidelines\n EDS Reimbursement Report (ELIAS Beneficiary)\n EDS Reimbursement Report (Externals)\n \n\n \n Learn More\n EDS 2024 Official Website\n Summary of Last Year’s EDS Event\n Learn About the ELLIS PhD Program\n \n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n \n \n \n Event Footer\n \n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n Details\n Start: August 26 \n End: August 30 \n Event Categories: Symposium\, Workshops \n Event Tags: eds2024\, sustainableai\, symposium \n Website\n Visit Event Website \n Organisers\n Institut Polytechnique de Paris \n University of Tübingen \n \n \n Venue\n Campus des Cordeliers – Sorbonne university \n 15 rue de l'École-de-médecine \n Paris\, 75006 France \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n © 2024 Event Organisation. SUMMARY:4th Community Workshop 2024
DESCRIPTION:26 – 27 June 2024Venue: Centre for Research and Technology Hellas – CERTHLocation: Thessaloniki\, Greece \nTo celebrate four years of building excellence of AI research and foresighting the impact of the European Networks of Excellence Centres in AI and Robotics (AI NoEs)\, the Fourth Community Workshop 2024 aims to provide a forum for sharing ideas and best practices and sustaining collaborative activities beyond the NoEs’ lifetime.The event is open for a broader audience beyond the NoEs community – simply register for online attendance and join the exchanges with us! \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \nThe two-day 4th Community Workshop is hosted by CERTH and co-organised by all the NoEs\, with one specific day on AI and education. \n● 26 June 2024: NoE Community Workshop● 27 June 2024: AIDA Symposium “AI Education Beyond Borders” \n\n\nThe goal is to foster collaborations within the NoEs’ community and to discuss ways forward to maximise the impact of NoE research in 2025 – and beyond. This 4th Community Workshop builds on the previous events: the First ICT-48 Community Workshop held online in June 2021\, a very fruitful Second ICT-48 Community Workshop held in Brussels in October 2022\, and the Third Community Workshop in June 2023 Siena. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Registration (Online only)\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Agenda\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Organising Committee\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Target Audience\nOnline Attendance: The workshop is designed specifically for the entire AI NoEs’ Community but is open to anyone interested. In this case\, please register for an online participation only. This registration form can also be used by members of the NoEs community who cannot (for whatever reason) attend onsite. For remote listeners at the plenary sessions\, the possibility of participation is unlimited across the broader community and beyond. \nOnsite Attendance: Due to limited room capacity\, the workshop is open to a given number of NoEs community members to attend on-site. To ensure a balanced group of in-person participants from NoEs stakeholders\, each NoE will receive 8 tickets. A link to a special registration form will be emailed separately to NoEs coordinators and project managers so that they can decide on on-site participation for each NoE and distribute the link. \nAlso the representatives of the European Commision\, ADRA\, ADRA-e and AI4Europe are more than welcome and expected to come to Thessaloniki. \n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Live-Streaming on YouTube\nIf you missed out on registering for full online participation\, you can watch our live stream on AI4Media Youtube: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n \n \n \n Event Footer\n \n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n Details\n Date: June 27 \n Time: 9:00 - 22:00 \n Event Category: Workshops \n \n \n Add to Calendar\n \n \n \n\n \n \n Venue\n Location: Scandic Grand Marina \n Katajanokanlaituri 7\, Helsinki\, 00160 Finland \n \n \n \n \n \n View Venue Website \n \n \n\n \n © 2024 Scandic Grand Marina. SUMMARY:AI Excellence Lecture on Learning manipulation skills from instructional videos
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: People easily learn how to change a flat tire of a car or perform resuscitation by observing other people doing the same task\, for example\, in an instructional video. This involves advanced visual intelligence abilities such as interpreting sequences of human actions that manipulate objects to achieve a specific task. Currently\, however\, there is no artificial system with a similar level of cognitive visual competence. In this talk\, I will describe our recent progress on learning from instructional videos how people manipulate objects and demonstrate transferring the learnt skill to a robotic manipulator. \nLecturer: Dr. Josef Sivic holds a distinguished researcher position at the Institute of Robotics\, Informatics and Cybernetics at the Czech Technical University in Prague where he heads the Intelligent Machine Perception team and the ELLIS Unit Prague. He received the habilitation degree from Ecole Normale Superieure in Paris in 2014 and PhD from the University of Oxford in 2006. After Phd he was a post-doctoral associate at the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He received the British Machine Vision Association Sullivan Thesis Prize\, three test-of-time awards at major computer vision conferences\, an ERC Starting Grant and\, in 2023\, an ERC Advanced Grant. \nAbout AIDA: The four ICT-48 networks (AI4Media\, ELISE\, HumanE-AI NET\, TAILOR) and the VISION project joined forces and\, under the joint initiative of VISION and AI4Media\, founded a new joint instrument to support a world-level AI education and research programme. \nThe International AI Doctoral Academy (AIDA) has been created for offering access to knowledge and expertise and attracting PhD talents in Europe. SUMMARY:AI Excellence Lecture on Deep learning and Process Understanding for Data-Driven Earth System Science
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: For a better understanding of the Earth system we need a stronger integration of observations and (mechanistic) models. Classical model-data integration approaches start with a model structure and try to estimate states or parameters via data assimilation and inverse modelling\, respectively. Sometimes\, several model structures are employed and evaluated\, e.g. in Bayesian model averaging\, but still parametric model structures are assumed. Recently\, Reichstein et al. (2019) proposed a fusion of machine learning and mechanistic modelling approaches into so-called hybrid modelling. Ideally\, this combines scientific consistency with the versatility of data driven approaches and is expected to allow for better predictions and better understanding of the system\, e.g. by inferring unobserved variables. This talk will elaborate on developments of this concept and illustrate its promise but also challenges with examples on biosphere-atmosphere exchange\, and carbon and water cycles from the ecosystem to the global scale. \nLecturer: Prof. Dr. Markus Reichstein  is Director of the Biogeochemical Integration Department at the Max-Planck-Institute for Biogeochemistry. His main research interests revolve around the response and feedback of ecosystems (vegetation and soils) to climatic variability with an Earth system perspective. Of specific interest is the interplay of climate extremes with ecosystem and societal resilience. He is addressing these topics with a combination of artificial intelligence and system modelling approaches to exploit the wealth of experimental\, ground- and satellite-based Earth observations. SUMMARY:ELLIS Multimodal Learning Systems Workshop on Multimodal Foundation Models
DESCRIPTION:Theme\n \n \n \n \n \n Multimodal foundation models are a revolutionary class of AI models that provides impressive abilities to generate content (text\, images\, sound\, videos\, protein structures\, and more)\, and do so by interactive prompts in a seemingly creative manner. These foundation models are often autoregressive\, self-supervised\, transformer-based models that are pre-trained on large volumes of data\, typically collected from the web. They already form the basis of all state-of-the-art systems in computer vision and natural language processing across a wide range of tasks and have shown impressive few-shot learning abilities. The perceived intelligence and adaptability of models like ChatGPT\, Stable Diffusion\, Gemini\, and GPT4 impress\, but their aptitude to produce inaccurate\, misleading\, or false information (and present it confidently and convincingly) makes them unsuitable for any task of importance and poses serious societal concerns. In this workshop we present recent advances on multimodal foundation models from academia and industry and discuss their impact and implications moving forward. \n \n \n \n \n \n Location\n \n \n \n \n \n The workshop is hosted at the Mathematisches Forschungsinstitut Oberwolfach (MFO). Accommodation and meals will take place in Hotel Hirschen\, which is within walking distance of the MFO. \n \n \n \n \n \n The workshop is hosted at the Mathematisches Forschungsinstitut Oberwolfach (MFO). SUMMARY:AI Excellence Lecture on Hybrid & Causal Machine learning in the Earth sciences
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Most problems in Earth sciences aim to do inferences about the system\, where accurate predictions are just a tiny part of the whole problem. Inferences mean understanding variables relations\, deriving models that are physically plausible\, that are simple parsimonious\, and mathematically tractable. While machine learning models excel as approximators\, they often disregard fundamental physics laws\, compromising consistency and confidence. To address these challenges\, we propose exploring the interplay between domain knowledge and machine learning. Physics-aware and hybrid machine learning models are seen as necessary steps toward understanding the data-generating process\, with causality offering significant advancements. I will discuss recent hybrid and causal machine learning methodologies to attain consistent and explainable results. This work outlines a collective\, long-term AI agenda for developing algorithms that can discover knowledge in the Earth system. \nLecturer: Professor Gustau Camps-Valls is a Full Professor in Electrical Engineering at the Universitat de Valencia. He is an expert in machine learning  algorithms for geosciences and remote sensing data analysis\, having published extensively. He has a Ph.D. in Physics and is an IEEE Distinguished Lecturer. He has received two European Research Council (ERC) grants and holds a Hirsch’s index h=88 (Google Scholar). He is also a Highly Cited Researcher since 2020. Gustau has achieved significant recognition with numerous awards and honors\, including IEEE Fellow (2018)\, ELLIS Fellow (2019)\, Fellow of the European Academy of Sciences (EurASc)\, the Academia Europeae (AE)\, and the Asia-Pacific Artificial Intelligence Association (AAIA) all in 2021.
