The ELLIS Milan + RIKEN AIP Joint ELIAS Workshop recently brought together around 40 leading researchers from the ELLIS Unit Milan, RIKEN AIP, and the ELIAS Project for two days of intense scientific exchange and discussion on the latest advances in artificial intelligence and machine learning.
Held on May 7-8, 2026, the workshop featured a rich programme of talks spanning reinforcement learning, online learning, bandits, deep learning theory, and a wide array of other cutting-edge topics.
Strengthening Global AI Collaborations
The workshop opened with welcome remarks by Prof. Nicolò Cesa-Bianchi (ELLIS Unit Milan) and Prof. Masashi Sugiyama (RIKEN AIP), who both highlighted the critical importance of strengthening collaborations between the European and Japanese AI research communities.
Throughout the two-day event, speakers from both institutions presented their latest research results, creating dynamic opportunities for dialogue across a broad range of topics in both theoretical and applied machine learning.
Fostering the Next Generation of AI Leaders
Beyond the technical presentations, the event provided an important occasion for researchers at all career stages to:
- Exchange innovative ideas and challenge current methodologies.
- Discuss future collaborations on global AI initiatives.
- Strengthen institutional connections between European and Japanese hubs.
By bringing together scientists under the framework of the ELIAS Project, the workshop successfully highlighted the immense value of international cooperation in advancing AI research that matters
