Theme Development Workshops (TDW)

Thematic panels and workshops aimed at researchers and industry representatives on AI trends, designed to support the community in defining the strategic research agenda and innovation roadmap.

As one of the core activities of the ELIAS project, the Theme Development Workshops (TDWs) bring together researchers, industry leaders, and other stakeholders to explore industrial trends, identify needs, and align them with AI capabilities across Europe. These workshops are organised in close collaboration with the EU AI Networks of Excellence (NoEs), ensuring the active participation of key experts and organisations from the AI ecosystem.

Objectives:

  • Collaboratively identify strategic AI research areas and challenges within the scope of each workshop.
  • Establish collaborative structures to continue addressing these topics after the event.
  • Provide a comprehensive summary of workshop outcomes, complemented by market analysis and trend foresights, offering a complete overview of AI capabilities and challenges in Europe.

What is a Theme Development Workshop?

  • A half-day or full-day workshop with a select number of pre-invited participants.
  • The programme includes plenary presentations, focused group discussions, and breakout sessions designed to encourage detailed, productive exchanges.
  • The key goal is to foster collaboration between academia and industry in defining a strategic AI research and innovation roadmap for specific industries or societal challenges (e.g., climate change).

Who should participate?

  • Strategic thinkers, AI researchers, and experts from both industry and academia.
  • Stakeholders and experts eager to discuss and contribute to long-term strategic topics, as well as more focused short-to-mid-term activities.
  • Participants from all career stages and levels, ensuring diverse perspectives across Europe.

Why should you participate?

  • Shape the future of AI in Europe by identifying grand challenges and collaborating with leading scientists, industry players, and policymakers.
  • Network with like-minded individuals and explore opportunities for further engagement through follow-up activities, including internships, hackathons, transfer labs, and PhD programmes.
  • No participation fees for the workshops (please note, travel expenses for on-site events are at the participant’s expense).
